Is this a myth or can a mantis shrimp really crack a glass tank?

They could if they wanted to and it was thin glass. However, they aren't going to exert energy on breaking glass. They would rather smash shells to get to yummies.

our local co op decided a couple of years ago to get into saltwater they started off with a 55g tank I was pretty excited because if it all worked out they were going to expand & sell fish dry goods etc every weekend for a month I went up & checked out how they were going on the 5th weekend NO TANK! talked to them & found that they added a mantis shrimp & the next morning they came in to a cracked tank & a mess & decided to give up (boo!)
so I vote yes

I can tell you that for a fact they can and it doesn't have to be all that thin of glass. Mine popped the glass on my 30g because my sister was taunting it. It didn't crack, it shattered. This was a large specimen, granted.

Many times, they only throw a cautionary blow at much much lower strength. This was no cautionary blow I guess, lol.

It should be noted though, that even Roy Caldwell, the mantis king who has kept in the range of thousands of mantis has only had this happen a handful of times.

According to Roy Caldwell only the larger, stronger species can break glass. Large O. scyllarus or G. chiragra.

I'd say yes. I spoke to someone at LFS how had a mantis that breaks rock, then drags the little pieces to the other side of the tank. I'm sure if it was determined it could break or crack glass.
