i'm just appalled at the lack of ANY explanation of proper husbandry. all these dog, cat, livestock shows. no thought to the needs of a non furry living creature. just toss it into the tank with some crappy bioball fixture. huge bioloads, no biological filtration.

Their tanks are cool. Their stocking...is not. I can't believe how overstocked or just plain badly stocked most of their tanks are. The Freshwater stockings are the worst. If they would just get a stocking specialist/biologist on their team, my opinion would improve dramatically.

I understand and agree that probably under most circumstances they do what is right and take care of the livestock put in their tanks. I personally think the show is somewhat entertaining but I do hate how it depicts the hobby as no patience needed. It's already hard enough to convince some people, even friends, that the guy at the LFS or big box pet store may have been telling you what you wanna hear.

And I do hate the portrayal of magic Nutrisea water. But I would have taken the endorsement check too lol

I think they should just should just show them making the tanks... Then edit it after the tank has cycled and show them putting in the fish in .

That eel tank is somewhat impressive. It should be, as it is for them. I wonder if they threw it together and tossed in a bunch of eels before it cycled. Probably not, as it is their tank and it would cost them money in the long run. I have first hand info that a local tank they built (the nail shop) ended up wiped out in quick order. Way to go.

Haven't read the entire thread so if this was already mentioned sorry.

I do wonder if the marine biologist was against this. Seems his place in the show is to throw doubt as well as water on most things.

The only problem is he is right.

That show and all the others make me crazy!! What a bunch of tools!! I'm sure they're all super nice people and perhaps even know a thing or two... but in the context of these shows they come off as completely clueless clowns!!! And not the beautiful designer clowns! Trying to turn reefing into entertainment for the masses just rubs me the wrong way. Take aquaria, remove all the tech/science/info/synergy and beauty of the hobby and you get mindless mind numbing garbage! I say this with the utmost respect for the individuals as people and with the utmost contempt for the production.... actually scratch that. My contempt carries over to the individuals but I do feel bad about that!

They should make a one hour episode that shows the process of a tank cycling. I bet the ratings would go off the charts.
On the Brite side the new assistance biologist on fish tank kings makes the show much much more entertaining. I bet ratings are up from last year.

Anyone building acrylic with fake coral is a disgrace to the hobby never mind the fish selection! Pfffff every tank looks like crap.

I hate that show they put on with the live sand and "live ocean water". I don't care whats in it it doesn't cycle in the 5 minuet acclimation period you give your fish. And there is no way that the water temperatures are where they should be when they introduce them either.

I read the article on aquanerd. i'm sorry but there's no way to "completely instantly cycle" an aquarium. it takes time for the natural populations to rise, fall and build up. especially for the size and amount of fish they introduce! i just don't think they grasp much more about the hobby than how to build a plastic box and put it into old furniture.

Yup. I would have these guys build me an amazing tank. But they would not get to stock it or put a coral insert anywhere near it.
