Hi all - I can't recall what the absolute correct way to follow when I'm upgrading an old established tank to a new. Please review what I share below and kindly correct if necessary.

1. New tank will have new made salt water and new substrate
2. Rock from existing tank with and any corals transferred to the new tank
3. Use some old filter floss from the old tank and put into the new tank's filter compartment
4. Move all livestock into new tank - temperature and salinity will match as closely as possible.

Does the above 4 things sound correct, and such that there will be no negative impact to all corals and inhabitants?

The 5th thing I don't know whether I should do is just transfer as much water of the old tank into the new - is this necessary?

Thanks

Looks good!
The old rock will be your bio filter, so do not bring over dirty filter floss. It’s just full of dead and decaying waste.

If you are transferring corals, I also try and match alkalinity and calcium.

I have a question too, I’m doing the same thing but my smaller tank has no where near enough live rock so I wanted to add more. Can I just put in the old live rock and add new live rock at the same time?

Also my current tank has a canister filter and the new one has a sump. I’m going to need to add more material to the sump as the stuff in my canister filter won’t be enough. Can I do this aswell?

When I do a tank transfer I like to put ceramic bio filter in the current running tank for as long as possible. When i do the switch I will move those to the new tanks sump. Also I use all the old water from my previous tank into the new tank. I like to keep everything as balanced as possible.
