So, some big changes to the tank... I got sick of the sand. There was places where it had been blown away and the bottom of the tank was showing, and other places where it was deeper than 4", not to mention the pile where the tangs poop was over 8" deep! It smelt terrible when I sucked out that mound, there was some definite hydrogen sulfide buildup... there's still quite a bit of substrate, larger pieces I wasnt able to suck out with ridgid and unacessable piles under rock. I think I will be happier with the thickness as that works its way out and spreads out.

I did have a bit of a nutrient spike after sucking it out, so I sacrificed some anaerobic denitrifying zones. But between the sea cucumbers, sand sifting stars, and I added a goat fish turning the sand bed over along with the other brittle starfish and detritivores. I think this send bed will be a lot less work for me long term, and hydrogen sulfide buildup scares me.

The goat is in this picture if you look hard enough, LOL he's so little. If anyone is in Denver this weekend, all those frags on my makeshift frag rack are going to Reefstock. great speakers really awesome event, Jake Sdams and Rob Mougey always put on a good convention.

I broke down and decided to do some pretty serious trimming as well. Some of these colonies were getting substantially larger than others. I think I want to pull the green slimmer (yongei) out of the tank completely, it's not growing the direction I want it to. and I have to trim it a lot already. It's going to cause more and more issues as it continues to get bigger.

Pre hacking pictures anyone?

Selfishly I want you to keep the green slimer in there and let it get massive. So few people have really BIG staghorns in their tanks so it's cool to see it when they do. I do understand though, I had to frag one of my slimer colonies (have 3 types) in half so I could lower it to get better growth.

Your milka stylo has me thinking... I like how you've got it in multiple places. I may do the same in my tank as the milka is getting quite large and there are a few places that could use some coral. :0)

Great choice on the goat fish!

So I maintain tanks for a little business called Aquatic Art Inc in denver. How about I just post some pictures of massive slimmer colonies I take care of and take it out of my personal tank hahaha fair trade?

I love the milka, stylos in general... theres a nice pink cats paw under that slimmer, it needs a better spot or less competition. Fillers work great in big tanks lol, when I need salt I just pull a duplicate!

Thank you!
How about some top downs? Still a lot of room for these corals to grow and fill in!

Love the video, but would love to see a longer one, perhaps with a walk through of the equipment. I've said it before but the height of your tank just makes it so appealing to look at. It's really filling in nicely.

How is that "coast to coast" cut out working for you ? Does it skim well ? It looks like it doesn't really skim the surface like conventional overflows since the water level is always above the cutout ?
Building a 700 gallon plywood of my own and debating between an internal vs external coast to coast overflow with bean animal.

I absolutely love it, the surface skimming is exceptional, and the bean animal is so silent I will never go another way

Have to say I'm very happy with how this tank has matured. Now just waiting on mobius!
It's done! Finally! Well after a few little minor adjustments.
