Sad letting go of something with a lot of good memories attached to it. Growing older going thru the changes it brings isn’t for wimps
The mp40 is a beast nice addition to the tank
I sure hope I love the MP40. Growing through change is tough. We all go through it right?

I never liked my MP40's but that is because they didn't really match my tank layout. Now I only use one in my 20g QT when it is set up.
This growing old thing is tough. I'm dealing with it better than my wife but it is hard some times. I'm trying to get her enjoying the empty nest thing more.... even booked another Disney vacation for us this spring! :D

Hard not too. Just the smell of our old camping gear used to make me smile going by it powerful trigger of good memories. Was hard getting rid of it all only thing eased it was knowing I gave it to a younger family just starting camping. Knowing a new family with young kids was going to build memories like we did made it a bit easier tho

Yep, that is the way to go. In some ways I think when they are old enough to leave home while we do what we want it might be easier. Disney in the spring is awesome! EPCOT Flower festival is just beautiful.

That's where we plan on spending the most time. We want to go back and not rush like we did the last trip.

Want me to mail you one of my MP40's to use to see if you like it? It's a little older so not quite as nice as the newest ones but the flow pattern is very similar. I'll want it back eventually in case I ever start a cube but that isn't happening any time soon.

I also didn't like MP40s as they made an oil slick on my tank...……………..Oh Wait...… That was WD40.
Sorry, I will go away now. These abbreviations confuse me. ;Bookworm

Why is the word "Abbreviation" so long? You would think they would have abbreviated it by now. ;Bucktooth

The Elegant Corals dino and cyano treatment plan

I did not follow it exactly by mistake but I got good results so far any way. I thought I would share what I did and how my tank responded.

188 gallon display tank
75 gallon sump
I calculate my tank water to be around 240 with rock displacement.
I ran the fresh air line continuously
I left my ATO with Kalk on line too

DAY 1
Ran a fresh airline hose via a aqualifter pump from a window directly to the tank, zip tied the wood airstone to my magnavore magnet so I could place the airstone low in the tank.
pH 8.2

DAY 2
Siphoned all visible amphidinium covered sand from the display tank,
15 gallon water change,
dosed Stability 40 ml
Dr. Tims Waste Away 40 ml
Vodka 40 ml
Fresh air running
Skimmer off
No GAC or GFO
UV filter off
Fine filter sock in place
Lights off

DAY3
Blew off my rocks and disturbed the sand bed
dosed Stability 40 ml
Dr. Tims Waste Away 40 ml
Vodka 40 ml
30 ml Vibrant
Skimmer off
No GAC or GFO
UV filter off
Fine filter sock in place
Lights off
Water got cloudy

DAY 4
dosed Stability 40 ml
Dr. Tims Waste Away 40 ml
Vodka 40 ml
Skimmer on, drain tube added to accommodate possible crazy foaming
No GAC or GFO
UV filter off
Fine filter sock removed, it was dark red/brown and foul smelling
Course filter material placed in sump
Lights on reduced schedule
Sand bed had no visible red amphidinium on the sand
Small patches of red cyano not visible
Water was a little cloudy
Skimmer did not go crazy, just a pretty wet foam

DAY5
Skimmer on, not too crazy
NO GAC or GFO
UV off
Lights on reduced schedule
40 ml of vodka
40 ml Vibrant added
Coarse filter material
Dosed hydrogen peroxide in the skimmer
Moved my power heads all around to blow out low flow areas and stir up the sand bed
Water was not really cloudy
Sand bed clear, but grey sludge detritus building up in low flow areas
pH 8.0

DAY 6
Skimmer on, not too crazy
NO GAC or GFO
UV off
Lights on reduced schedule
40 ml of vodka
40 ml Vibrant added
Coarse filter material
Dosed hydrogen peroxide in the skimmer
Moved power heads back to their spots
Water was not really cloudy
Left off the main pump and power heads for awhile to let the dust settle
Siphoned all the visible grey detritus, the smell was horrendous!
Sand looks great
Some green cyano on the rocks (I presume)
GHA looks wimpy and has not visibly grown

DAY 7
Nothing done to the tank
Sand looks clean
Water is clear
Rocks have a green tinge to them when all the lights are off but the kitchen lights are on. This is a little concerning as before they looked purple and grey. Time will tell.

DAY 8
Nothing done to the tank
Sand looks great
Water looks clear
The rocks definitely have green tint to them.
Few Small patches of green cyano on the rocks
I’m going to give this a read and digest it and get back to you. Lots of variables that are giving my ‘1 changed parameter OCD’ a meltdown, lol

When you said ‘elegance corals’ I thought you meant Aussie elegance coral, as in, you got one. I’m very seriously considering geting one this week.

Also- I’m not getting notifications, so I had no idea on the updates. I’ll be checking in more regularly from now on.

Finally read the whole thread. Like reading a book about an aquarium build with the things in life happening along the way.
Seems like I know most of you now.

Victoria, glad to see your health is improving, God bless you, and Happy belated Birthday.
That is wonderful. I hope you continue to follow and add to this motley crew of aquarium nerds that contribute to my reefing joy.
Thank you NDIrish.

That cracks me up. Those elegance corals are beautiful.
I think the variables can possibly be very variable and still get good results.

I think the issue is that I like to know what did what, so I can isolate it and repeat it if needed. Just my training. The different mixtures of bacteria, Carbon dosing, the skimmer hydrogen peroxide, the aeration etc.

I’m very happy that you gave it a go, and it worked for you the way it did. I think I’m going to stick to Waste away, build up the dose slowly for a few weeks and see how it responds. If I was battling Dino’s, I’m sure I’ll look into a more aggressive treatment protocol.

I was about to buy an elegance last week, but the young guy at the lfs mentioned last second that they’ll literally reach out and spear big snails that get within 6”. Which gave me pause since I just got a bunch of BIG nassarius snails and tiger conchs. Then I had a daycare issue and forgot to research it further before I got swamped. That’s part of the plan for this week

I think the microfauna in large tanks are always changing, different organisms waxing and waning so repeating results is very hard to do, anyway. What worked this year might not work in a year or two due to those things that changed. I wish I could repeat word for word what that aquatic veterinarian said about it. It was very insightful. I kinda think this method is more like cooking a good gumbo or stew, rather than the exact sciene of baking a cake from scratch. You know, a pinch of this, a sprinkle of that, handul of this, works well. Not like 1/8 tsp of yeast or baking powder vs - eh...whatever...I lost my train of thought.
A coral that can spear snails? Huh?

Maybe not so much spear (lfs dudes words) but they can reach out and sting. Dwarf cerithes are pretty tasty apparently, and they will easily eat krill and large mysis
