Is this the same light that will be used on the new MAR 3181 and 3182 reactors? Is this light also being updated like the 8850.00 LED light? I am thinking of retro fitting this to a GEO reactor will it be too hot and crack the reactor? How long will it be until the 3181 and 3182 will be released?

The prototypes shown at Interzoo used the 8821, the final version will use a grow light spectrum LED specifically made for this purpose and we added a shielding to prevent much of the light from spilling out and improved the lid closure to make it easier to service. The basic Eco Chic line of lights will not see any update soon, the 8850 is a different animal as it can be color tuned. I would not expect any cracking issues as the 8821 is only 10W it is not very hot, EU requirements are that a consumer product can never exceed 50C and we hold to a limit of 40C to stay well below that. The 8850 actually dims to 14W when it is not submerged to protect against overheating so it would not have its full potential, As far as release date, the 3181 is finished and I will show a final version at MACNA, 3182 is delayed. I am unsure an actual release. The new closure requires a molded lid and we need to produce the mold and the lid for each unit before series production can start but I expect by November at least 3181 will be available.

Any update on Mar 3181 release date?

The last I heard was November, I will try to get a current ETA, I showed a near final version at MACNA so it is very close.

okay I'll be watching.

Will the shielding to prevent light from spilling out have a opening to watch that algae spin? ;Peeking

It will if you only use one light, it has two open strips, most likely the unit will ship with one light, the reason being is that we have tested it extensively and the second light does very little, changing from 6500K to grow light increased the growth dramatically, about 30%, but adding a second light in either case is a 10% increase. Even if you used two lights the film is not opaque, you can see the shadow of the algae inside.

At Interzoo the price quoted was around $330, with the magnet closure lid and some other upgrades it will increase but should still be sub $400.

The lid can be closed two ways, either magnetically, or by thumb screws. The idea being if you used it in sump, you could just use the magnets, it will likely leak a little and of course won't be as secure but removing the chaeto is extremely easy, if you use it externally, you will need to use the thumb screws.

Any word on whether just the grow light LED as a spare part will be available soon? I would love to add one to my refugium.

Roger do you know the dimensions of these reactors? I'm interested in the footprint of the smaller version if it's available.

Within a week or so, BRS and Marine Depot should have the 8831 light in stock.
