You could also attach the aluminum extrusion to the wall instead of the stand.

On my tank, the extrusion isn’t actually attached to anything yet. It’s just cantilevered between the back of the tank stand and the wall using a spacer that keeps the base of the extrusion pressed against the back of the stand. I’m likely going to permanently attach it later once I get everything finalized. Still working on getting everything setup how I like it first.

I’m using black 3030 extrusion I got from Amazon. It’s a lot stronger than I expected, and it holds my lights up unsupported on the far end of my peninsula (the span is roughly 30” long)

Thanks for the info. I had considered attaching to wall, but there is a window there, and not sure it would be doable. We won't have access to the new house until end of January, and I probably need to decide before that so I can order the tank. There does seem to be multiple options.

I currently have a canopy on my tank and used aluminum channel mounted in the canopy to hang my lights.

BEFORE assembling the IM stand insert a piece of wood into the upper length of the rear panel.
The closer to filling the opening the better so a table saw will be very handy.
This allows you to screw things into it that will have something to grab & hold onto.
You can do the front too if you think it might help.
I have the INT, you should get the EXT.

What do you dislike about the INT?

The internal poses some limitations, especially on the return.
It's a 3/4" that comes up from the bottom into a Y configuration & limits flow & positioning.
Plus you loose some real estate with the divider.
I would change it to a drain if I had to do it over.

I'm still trying to decide between an IM EXT and IM INT for my new tank.

On the INT, the overflow is the entire back of the tank, which means placing a powerhead on that wall would be difficult since the external magnet would be submerged. Has anyone done something like vacuum sealing the external magnet and putting it in the overflow that way?

Use the magnet through the wall.

The opening is metric.
if you have access to a table saw you will be able to make one up.
I used a piece 3/4" wide & had some room yet.

Worst case put the external magnet in a ziploc bag and put it into the overflow.
