a few weeks ago my fungia started detaching from his skeleton, whilst still maintaining its fluff and colour…

as of today, he’s completely fallen off his skeleton and is floating around the tank like a big green thing. he doesn’t have a skeleton so he cant hold onto anything and it just getting blown around by the movement of the water. sometimes he lands face down, but eventually will get picked up by the flow again.

he looks healthier than he did weeks ago in terms of now his mouth is closed and he still ate over the last few weeks.

has this happened to anyone? what should i do? if i touch him, he shrivels up as a normal coral would so i’ve been leaving him alone.

this is my original post from a few weeks ago: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/fungia-plate-coral-lifting-off-skeleton.913418/

and pics from today about a few minutes apart, just floating around

It's called polyp bailout. Sort of a last ditch survival effort. Don't let it get sucked into a pump or end up behind the rocks. Maybe keep it in a mushroom box/basket.

Ive never had it happen personally, but it's fascinating.
that’s very interesting, i assume keep the box near the bottom so lighting conditions don’t change too much? i can’t seem to make this mushroom happy when everyone else seems to be thriving

It's not a mushroom, it's a plate coral, LPS.
