Interested to hear everyone’s wishlist on captive bred fish. Hopefully we can start a heated discussion and eventually a poll to help inform our beloved captive breeding facilities where to focus next.

here is a list of my own, most of them Hawaiian simply due to the fact of unavailability. Others are just tough to keep when caught from wild:
Masked angelfish- availability
Bandit angelfish- availability
Potter’s angelfish- availability
Moorish idol- challenging
Achilles tang- challenging
Copperband butterflyfish- challenging
Pyramid butterflyfish- availability
Watanabe angelfish- availability
Leopard wrasses (varied species)- challenging
Crosshatch triggerfish- availability
Clown tang- challenging
Sohal tang- challenging
Gem tang- availability

most of the fish above are slightly larger ticket items and should be profitable to the breeders should they choose to invest.
Let me know your thoughts and what’s on your list!

Pencil wrasse and tamarin wrasse are both more difficult than leopards so I’d want them.
More sand sifting gobies as they are also challenging
Lionfish are another difficult to feed species
Ribbon eels though it is almost impossible to breed them unfortunately

Im setting up a new 40g tank soon and looking to go mostly captive bred. I only say mostly because I dont believe Pistol shrimp are available captive bred and am going to pair one of those with a ORA watchman goby.

Without having all the details the full list will be.
2 - Pygmy filefish ORA Captive bred. (Available seasonally, soon I might add)
1- Yellow watchman goby ORA captive bred (readily available)
1- Biota Forktail Blenny (seasonally)
2 Bangaii Cardinalfish ORA captive bred (Readily available)

Oh I totally wasn’t thinking of ribbon eels but definitely agree, would be amazing to see captive bred hardy ones

Care to name just a “top 3” among those wrasses? Are you mainly thinking flasher wrasses, or larger wrasses?
Honestly, as the bit under my name suggests;
Any wrasse. I don’t specifically want captive bred of any species. All wrasses would be a dream to get CB.
However my top 10 are;
- Anampses chrycosephalus
- Coris hewetii
- Pseudocheilinops ataenia*
- Xenojulis margaritaceus*
- Macropharyngodon choati
- Macropharyngodon kuiteri
- Halichoeres iridis*
- Halichoeres vroliki
- Paracheilinus cyaneus
- Paracheilinus attenuatus

I have tried to pick wrasses I don’t have currently however 3 on that list I do have currently (the 3 with an asterisk) :)
And I am currently hunting down a Choati so I’ll soon have 4 wild caught specimens of the ones on that list.

The one wraase I have always loved but has been very rare to come by, and expensive when they do is the mystery wrasse

I'll add Macropharyngodon geoffroyi to that. Hawaiian and a leopard.

I’m also trying to do mostly aquaculture and I would LOVE if someone did an aquacultured watchman goby/pistol shrimp combo.

Geoffroyi is on the list but that was simply my top 10, I could do another 10 but that would be leaning into dangerous territory with many Coris species appearing haha.

As for Non-Wrasse Fish, I’d love a CB Potter’s Angel, my LFS has a wild caught Potteri for £160 ($197.52) and it’s tempting.

Oh that’s a good point, I think there are cultured gobies but have not heard of cultured pistol shrimps, let along paired with gobies. That would be interesting.

This is kind of basic, but I really wish there were more non-fang blenny blennies around.
Funny you should mention- even though many consider blenny to be basic, they are my wife’s favorite. She thinks they are cute and full of personality.

There are absolutely CB Gobies! All yasha gobies in captivity are likely to be CB, and most common species we keep will likely have a CB counterpart.

Agree 100% with potteri angelfish. Not only they are rare these days but very underrated as far as angelfish! Also not the easiest to establish so would be great to see someone aquaculture it.
Here is the next question- assuming someone can produce some of the wrasses, say the Tamarin wrasse on top of the list, what would be an acceptable top dollar for you?
