I've heard these guys are quite unpleasant to other angels (and other fishes), even in oversized tanks, but they are a very pretty fish for sure.
LOL! Mine never bothers my other fish, he is the Boss though and everyone knows it. The Clarion is my favorite, the Passer for me was the next best thing! ;)

I’m not a fan of Holacanthus but yours has grown nicely. How big is it? And how big is the Purple Tang beside it? :)
Thanks! My Purple Tang is about 6 inches or so, I have had him a few years. The Passer I got as a 4 incher and he is about 7 inches now. I have had a few Emperors and a Koran at different times over the years. The Passer is my favorite. Very personable and they retain their colors too.

I need to take some new pics, those pics are about 6 months old! LOL! I need to get as good as you guys when it comes to taking pics of the tank! :D

Blue Faced Angel from juvenile to mature. The transition is wonderful to watch. Unfortunately I found out the hard way they are NOT reef safe to my dismay.

How aggressive are emperor angels to other fish (like a moorish idol)?
My emperor angel is only vey aggressive during feeding time. El Heffe, as you likes to be called, will actually make a deep base noise and chase all the fish away from the food. Fortunately, they all grew up with him since he was a wee juvy emporer and they have learned to deal with this.

Since I really want to add to this and they’re outside the range of “Dwarf” angelfish, I’ll add three more:
Chaetodontoplus melanosoma,
Chaetodontoplus dubolayi,
Chaetodontoplus meredithi.

After seeing the top in person as a juvenile, I really am liking the Chaetodontoplus species more now. Added any other angels since this thread?

I really like Chaetodon septentrionalis and its hybrids presumably with C. Melanosoma (both the Southeast Asian and C. cf Melanosoma from Japan). C. Vanderloosi is part of the “Melanosoma complex” but is only found in a small region off Papua New Guinea. Poma Labs has also bred an unknown Chaetodontoplus sp. (the “Black Phantom”) that originates in the Philippines but neither me or them are particularly sure about what exactly that species is or if it’s a hybrid.

But yeah I’d say if you ever come across a nice C. Septentrionalis (hopefully captive bred) in the UK, I’d get that one. They are a common angelfish in East Asian waters (Japan, southern China, Taiwan) down to Vietnam and maybe the Philippines or Indonesia, and they’re not a rare occurrence in the nets of fishermen. That’s a real pity as they’re one of my favorites, but such a fate is also shared by lots of deepwater fish from Japan like anthias and wrasses.

Odontanthias katayamai and even the Lanceolatus wrasse are catches in the trawl nets of Japanese fishermen.

I did see a C. septenteionalis actually, I just can’t justify the price tag haha. Beautiful species - I think if I ever get a 7’ tank, I’ll have to try mixing species from Chaetodontoplus.

Considering I’m obsessed with angelfish that’s a tough choice. But in no particular order

Apolemichthys arcuatus
Chaetodontoplus conspicillatus
Holacanthus clarionensis

those are but a few lol. I actually love them all. Want them all etc lol.

Yeah I would wait for the 7’ tank. Mixing Chaetodontoplus species would be great. I’m kind of 50/50 on the Conspic. It’s the most expensive of the bunch while I think some of the others are just as good looking. However, I’ve seen a couple people here get them and really enjoy them. Septentrionalis is just such an aesthetically pleasing species to me along with some other angels like the Regal, and the Centropyge / Paracentropyge. I think the captive bred ones use Taiwanese broodstock, but some of the ones from Vietnam have wicked blue patterns on their faces.

No current angels, but kept a few before. Regals are my favorites though out of all, followed by asfur, then koran.

I've kept red sea regals, indo-blue belly regals, asfur, blue girdled, blueface, koran, emperor, grey poma, chrysurus, wantanabei, lamarckii, and blue.

watanabei is one I have not had the pleasure of keeping yet, and always wanted to.
