howdy everyone, I’m havin a new biological function happening that I’m confused about and needed some guidance, this problem began about a week ago. Started slow but bloomed outrageously this morning.

my tank is right at 4 months old,

LIVESTOCK
I have 3 Ricordia Florida’s
1 acanthestrea
1 Duncan
1 Euphyllia
1 tracyphylia
1 goniopora
2 ocellaris
3 trochus
2 nassarius
1 lysmata

FEEDING
I feed corals every other day, mysis and a mix of reef roids and reef chili
feed fish one pinch of FluVal tropical bug bites once in the morning and evening

FILTRATION
im running A refugium with Chaeto that’s lit for 12 hour photoperiod for nutrient extraction

here are pics of my tank plus my parameters and lighting schedule at its peak. Let me know what ya’ll think, and best line of action!

Here’s a photo to compare rock that is out of direct sunlight as apposed to what is exposed.

Also, the lighting is at 100% white in the photos to give good perspective and is not my normal spectrum.

Is it stringy and have bubbles then I would say dino, best way to tell would be picking up a microscope.

@Frais It does have bubbles, and it is stringy. It’s also still here 1 hour after lights out, zoom in to pic #5 and you can see the bubbles really well

Does it disappear at all when the lights are out?
it usually does but today is the worst it’s been because I have been vacuuming the top of the sand bed the past three days into a filter sock in the sump, and then replacing the filter sock afterwards. I did not get to do that today, and this thing blew up on me quick. they are still there after one hour of no light

So adding a UV sterlizer can help, 3 day black out, also possibly raising the tank to 82 degrees is being talked about as a solution.

@Frais i have been thinking about doing the black out.

my tanks temp generally 79-81

However I’m curious, how long would something like this take to play out on its own and what are the repercussions of letting it play out naturally?

So some Dino's can be toxic so that can be an issue.

awesome thank you for the info!

Without access to a microscope, im guessing the level of certainty wether or not these are Diatoms or dino’s is pretty low. Am I correct? and If I am correct it would probably be worth it to see if the local school would let me borrow one for a hot minute to check @Frais
