Hi,

About 6 months ago I Decided to try my hand at keeping saltwater fish for the first time. Overall this has been a very positive experience and I’ve learned a lot along the way. At this moment, I’m still using a Fluval 306 canister filter on my 55g salt tank. I realize this is not optimal and I’ve been looking to change over to a sump setup.

As luck would have it, I scored some good stuff at a yard sale last week for a decent price. WithI’m wondering what else I need to ditch the canister and start using this setup instead. Everything related to filtration that I got at the yard sale is in the pics below.

well once it's wet some macro algae, and maybe some rocks. I see it has biological but mores better. Just clean it and get it going! Seeding with pods is good too! is your tank drilled?

No, not drilled unfortunately. I was looking at the CPR hang on overflow boxes.

Apologies if this is incredibly basic, but... I get the concept of water from the overflow going into the white PVC elbow over the bio balls. I get the part about water passing through those and the sponge in the bottom, then into the currently empty chamber where some rock would theoretically go... but then what? I see that there are two large grey fittings for water to exit, but am unsure what to attach to them. There are also two more holes in the side of the chamber that I’m assuming I have to seal?

Also, anybody have any thoughts what those two short lengths of tubing with the gray PVC elbows are for?

Is that pump (black box in the last picture) appropriate for a return pump in a 55g tank?

Thanks!!
