Mine is a long list for sure.
-Yellow tang
-Anglerfish/ Frogfish
-Eels
-Seahorses
-Pipefish
-Cephalopods (all of them)
-Sharks
-Dwarf angels
-Bandit angel
-Bellus and other larger angels
-Butterflies
-leopard wrasses
-Melanarus wrasse
-Dottybacks

I’m also limited by a small-ish tank and my hopes of a mandarin, and I’m sure there are so many I’m forgetting about. Maybe later on in life some opportunities will open up for me and I can have some bigger reef and FOWLR tanks.

I was looking at @JumboShrimp puffer in another thread and thought that was an awesome fish. Not addressing reef safe or not.

But It got me thinking about all the fish I have had but can’t now keep in a reef.

My coolest fish was back in the 80’s. It was a bi-colored parrot fish. Most awesome fish I ever had. No way it goes in a reef. I actually have been thinking about FOWLR just to get one.

Anyone else have a fish they would like to keep but can’t?

I have a striped dog face puffer, emperor snapper, blue and yellowfin cod, and a slender grouper. Absolutely love these fish, but my new tank is reef and unfortunately they are stuck in their current tank till I upgrade :(

Dog face puffer. I had one but he had to go. Quyoi parrotfish. Love these- reef safe- but really luck/hit or miss survival rate for such an expensive fish.
Quyoi is my #1 fav fish followed by Dog face but because they are a hit or miss + low survival rate I didn't bother mentioning. I fell in love with them when I first saw them diving in Thailand.

Blue-spotted maskray (Neotrygon kuhlii)

They are not a particularly difficult elasmobranch to keep alive (in comparison to the similar Bluespotted ribbontail ray (Taeniura lymma)), but they grow over a foot wide :(. Plus, they might bump into corals, damaging themselves and the coral.
