Do you absolutely need a skimmer? Can you use anything in substitution

Of course not, they are not a make or break on a system. You can run an ats, gfo, have a large fuge or just do water changes on a regular basis. A skimmer will allow you to do less water changes which will save money in the long run. Gfo can also get expensive if you are replacing it every few weeks. Personally I will always run a skimmer as it raises your orp and pulls out a lot of organics. I look at it like, without a skimmer your tank is like the sea without waves washing on the beach. Which is what your trying to replicate.

Anyway you can post a link to these skimmers? I have never heard of them and couldn't find anything online about them.

Got it, that skimmer is the same as the via aqua hot that has been out forever. Its not a unit I would ever suggest for anyone. I would rank it a notch above a seaclone : )

Skimmers based on power filters are a dicey proposition.

For a 29 gallon tank, it could be fine...as long as it actually skims.

Some skimmers of this style have been so terrible they do not even skim. Reviews on the Via Aqua version indicate it's flimsy and loud (which is expected) but it works. So like with most things, make sure you can return it if you don't like it or that you don't mind risking the purchase.

Remember that a skimmer is common equipment - it is NOT required equipment. You can opt to run your tank without a skimmer (or wait until a better one is available).

Not bad! IMO the skimmer is the biggest advancement in this hobby in a long time. Even a simple one like that if you can tune it properly will make a big difference in required work on the tank.
