I had a flasher recently die on me. It has been healthy for a few weeks and then started swimming in a corkscrew before dying the same night. Some people speculated this may have been caused from it jumping out of the tank and hitting the glass top that I put on there specifically to keep it from getting out of the tank. Do people that keep flashers all use soft/mesh or screen tops to their tanks?

Yes, most folks use and recommend the mesh tops.

They are easy to put together. You can buy a window screen kit at your hardware store. Only tools required would be measuring tape, hack saw, and one of those spline rolling tools.

You can also purchase a screen top. The two i've seen recommended here are the artful acrylic and octo-something or other.

I have good luck so far with a mesh top on my Redsea tank with my line spot flasher wrasse. Saved him off carpet 3x and counting, but not when lid was on properly

Mesh is considered the best. It will keep them in without injuring them/knocking them silly when they hit it.
