Local vendor boasted that he only brought his "most expensive" frags to the coral show I attended recently (Reefing USA-KC). Too bad for him as I dropped $200.00 dollars on frags at the booth beside his marked $20,00 a frag.
The best corals are the ones that are available when you're shopping for them and priced within reason.

Goniopora for me. Obsessed with them. Of course I've picked a notoriously difficult coral to keep alive. Picked up 3 for my birthday from cherry corals, they gave me a fourth free, a beautiful rising sun. Now it's up to me to keep them alive! Feeding 3x per week and dosing coral amino in hopes of success.

I'm having problems understanding what is meant by "best" coral...

There is no best coral. You get the corals that you like or at least the ones that are available to you that you like...

Ooo! I wonder if the answers are different now that we're halfway through 2022!

I’m really liking Acans right now and Palys. I’m surprised Acans haven’t been more popular
It's been a while since acans were a fad, but I do remember it happening a while back (maybe around 10 years ago). These things tend to move in phases. There always seems to be a coral species that's the "rage." Most recently euphyllia and gonis.

I remember that. I got into the hobby just as the acan craze was starting to cool down. It kicked back up again for a short period of time a few years later when wholesalers started getting some crazy bowers. These crazes seem to follow along with whatever is being imported. Would be nice to see a string of new crazy species (acans, chalices, etc.) pop up to see if tastes change
