If you learn nothing today yet, remember this rule: The more colorful the clam, the more light it requires.
Light and flow are two very important considerations for all reef clam is no different. There are many types of clams, and not all require the same lighting needs. It’s a myth that all clams need high-intensity lighting. My favorite clam species are crocea and maxima clams for ease of care but they also require more light. Gigas and derasa clams can get by in deeper tanks with use of t5 or power compact lighting.
Crocea and maxima clams do best under high-intensity, reef-ready lights. Maxima is my favorite

What would leave a 2" clam empty overnight. This happened with my first and I've been afraid to try again since.

This is my tank for the time being it will have 3 ai prime over it it’s a 130 gal 25” deep once I have the money I’ll upgrade to the brs hybrid and mount my ai primes on that adding an additional 4 t5 bulbs idk if that’s enough for a bright clam on the rock work or not but I’d like one lol

Tridacna derasa would be the most forgiving and what I'd recommend for a first clam. It is not a myth that clams require intense lighting as that is the most important thing you can give to a tridacna. There is absolutely no species I'd ever recommend keeping under compact fluorescent lighting.

Well it would be led t5 hybrid Iv kept maxima b4 I moved from Cali to Texas and didn’t want to risk the clam so I have it back to the lfs I got it from
But I had it for 8 months b4 that and it was always open and seemed happy even got some white shell growth on the lip of the shell
That was just under my ai primes but they where on a 10” deep tank so very close

I agree with others. Although I have had crocea and maxima, derasas are the easiest and most forgiving. They do get large quickly so keep that under consideration. Although my derasa’s size was an argument for me to go from my 125 to 180 :)

In terms of ranked order from easiest to hardest...

T. Derasa
H. Hippopus
T. Squamosa
T. Maxima
T. Crocea

Unfortunately the general rule is the easier the clam, the larger the adult size.
