they're nice without question... nicer than a Purple or a Gem is arguable though. The price point on a yellow sits right between those two now which is pretty crazy.
It’s all personal preference. I think yellows look much nicer than purples. Purple is actually my fav color but a purple tang isn’t a royal gramma purple.

A healthy yellow tang is neon from across the room.

I do think gems are very nice looking... especially when small.

Biota has yellow in stock right now for 150 so I would not compare them to gems in price though.

Biota sells for $149, seems like a fair price for a captive born fish all things considered. My YT is probably my favorite fish, I’ve had “her” for nearly 10 years and paid $65 I think.

Both tangs in the picture were purchased at the same time for <$100. According to some sites they would be ~$800 now

fair enough but the disparity in cost in mid-west Canada where i'm at isn't as far apart as it may be for you. The Purple i have in my system right now was $80. Yellows are 5x that if they're even available at all

I had two yellow's and 1 died last week, bummer! I don't want to spend too much to replace him. I can wait. If I have to spend a lot then I think I may get a gem.

They tend to be hardy, but taking into consideration how aggressive they are, I wouldn’t pay more than what they used to cost ,$30-$60.

Purple tangs are cheaper than yellows here .
ive saw yellows for as much as $250-$499

purple I have saw them for less than $100
At my LFS, they are $200 each, but that’s because they are very hard to get up here.

If I was buying, I wouldn’t want to spend anymore than $50, but $100 does sound fair.

$60. Wild. $119. Captive. Y'all crazy if you are paying more. Fisheries being shut down have been a topic of discussion and a thing since I can remember. I've been in the hobby since the 80's. So, no to the greed. What's the phrase. "Never let the opportunity over crisis passed by without taking advantage of it." We've been seeing a lot of that haven't we? Especially in the US.

You realize Hawaii banned harvesting them right? This isn't just some "fisheries shutting down" talk.

I'd venture to say it was quite a bit more than one "idiot"
LOL, idiots are like aiptasia. Many more lurking unseen than those that make themselves obvious. My favorite saying of all time (I think?) is ‘remain silent and be thought a fool, open your mouth and remove all doubt’.

I fully expect/hope that my current yellow tang will outlast my time in the hobby. If I were in the market, I would top out at $150.
