What is the Significance of Iodine?

After a ICP test was ran my iodine came back as 10.00 µg/l. From what is recommended it is considerably low. What is the Significance of Iodine? What are the benefits of having the right level?

There are many opinions, but the scientifically proven benefits for most organisms are not evident and I stopped dosing it without seeing a difference.
