I am trying to understand my filter media! (Sorry, super newbie over here!)
the black stuff is… carbon? But what is the brown stuff?

Based on the color of the bag my guess would be that you are right and the black one is carbon, and the brown one may be GFO (granular ferric oxide) which absorbs phosphate from the water.

What is this filter media?
