What my Wife hears when I said I wanted a fish tank.

Real Estate Cooking GIF by CBC

In reality I only wanted a small-ish (75-90G) tank and ended up with a FB marketplace custom 150G tank, which fit the basement nook perfectly.

This one is of 400g . Doing this 40 years, and as you can imagine, Ive been through many sizes and find its the bigger tanks that are satisfying-forgiving- reduced maintenance and room for everything I desire to place in tank.
As many are aware, I will be going to a 1500g tank and not sure if thats still big enough for my liking but any bigger, I wont get it through the door.

Definitely need to see this 1500 build from

I have had 4 tanks. The first, back in the late 80s was a 40 gallon XH built in the wall. It was horrible to maintenance. Then I went to a 90 gallon in 2000. In 2011 my mom in law who lived with us got very sick and her care necessitated that I get a smaller tank so got a 36 bowfront. Finally in 2016 I bought the 56 gallon column tank I have now. I bought it for seahorses, (pictured below)

so it's 30" wide by 18" deep and 24" high. After the ponies lived out their natural lives I switched it over to a mixed reef. It fits the space very well and now that I am a woman in my 6th decade it's a good size without overwhelming maintenance.

I’m currently running a 65 gallon 36”x18”x24” LxWxH. I’ve had many, many different tanks and this may be my second favorite dimension wise so far. I really want to go back to a 48” tank eventually, ideally 48”x24”x24”.

My first saltwater tank was 55g, then 125g then added 2 more 55g. Now I have a 625, 240 and 140. Pretty happy. If I ever get another tank it will be to consolidate 3 tanks into 1 so it will be really big….not in the cards! …hmmmm

I like the size of my 13.5 evo. Easy to maintain not too big not too small. My husband is on the opposite end of the spectrum lol.

I have the Goldilocks tank....not too big and not too small, but just right. A custom five foot 90 gallon. I'm not a photographer, but here it is:

I have had 75 gallon tanks for years. But recently set up my dream tank….150 gallon. I absolutely love this tank. My family is really into it too. I still have lots of corals and fish to add.

I currently have a 55 gal I can’t go larger than 5’ but would like one about that size. I recently looked at a 75 but when I inquired about having it drilled I was quoted around $400 is that about the going rate?

One aspect I love about the hobby is the variety of shapes and sizes a tank can come in. I am wondering what is the current size of your tank, and are you happy with that size or would you want to go bigger or smaller.
I have a 5g cube and a 60g cube. So far the 60g cube has given me more problems vs the 5g. 5g cube very easy to fill up and create coral art, 60g more room to play and add new/larger fish and coral. Both are an eye catcher for sure but I think I love the 5g better. Easier maintenance and still is beautiful

Happy with my 75 gallon tank. Realizing I have no more room for new coral frags. I can still add some fish. I don't think I will go bigger until I get better at reading my corals and fixing their issues. Mistakes aren't that costly in a 75 gallon tank.

I think there are 3 things to consider before You choose the size of a tank.

1. Does it fit the animals i want to keep? I now have a tank of almost 10 feet and i was surprized to see what adiiference it made when i transferred the yellow and purple tangs there from a 5 foot tank.
Now my clowns, grammas and Chrysipteras use less then half the tank so they can do well in a 5 foot tank.
The Ptereleotris use almost the whole tank so i think 8 feet can be good for them. And Surgeons need every inch of my 10 feet.

2. Does it fit me? Big tanks are impressive but you seldom look at the whole tank if it is very big. I think 6 to 8 feet are about the limit where you look at the whole tank as such. The Maintenance differs too. A small tank need a few minutes often - a big tank needs a few hours seldom.

3. Does the tank fit the family? The usual decoration stuff in a home is less then a foot. A tank bigger than that will alter the whole impression of the room.

Currently I have a 45 cube with a sump. Got back into the hobby last November after a 9 year hiatus. Previously had a 150g SPS system. After an entire life in this hobby you run a bunch of different tank sizes. For me it seems that I have figured out the perfect size is in 70 to 80 gallon range. That way you have about 120+ gallons with the sump. Also a shallower tank is easier to manage. I see the new Waterbox Frag 125.4 in my future.

I started with a 55g fresh years ago, that lasted about 3 weeks and I bought an Oceanic 125 drilled for sump. Had that for about 4 months sold it, bought a 8foot long 300g. Had this tank going on 8? Maybe 9 years now. In January I decided I was going to put together a Marine tank finally, bought a new 75g from Petco and Feb 2nd put it in my living room and added rock and water. 2 months later that 300 is going to get retrofitted to SALT and after Thanksgiving this year, I will be down to just 1 display tank, a 300g Marine. Pics of both. Yes my 75g mixed reef is only 60 days old :) I have Coralline Algae growing in it also. Picking up those trochus snails I bought from LFS with the purple on their shells paid off.
