So few years ago, I used some bio media balls and heard it was leeching aluminum so I pulled them all out two years ago. Now I have a newer tank and want to add some into the sump since I don’t have a lot of live rocks in.

what brand are hobbyist nowadays use that is supposed has no aluminum leeching?

thanks

Seachem matrix is cheap and durable. However, I'd probably just used crushed coral sand in the future. I only use it because I have had a bag gone through several tanks. I won't use any in the future except in quarentines or in bare bottom tanks (unlikely for me)

Crushed corals sand would not ideal for me since it will be a sump where the skimmer sits. But I will take a look of the matrix.

Seachem matrix. I always keep some bagged up in the system somewhere. Pull some out if I need to start a QT or something, then just replace what I've used/taken out.

Put more rock or rock rubble down there. Doesn't have to be live but it's quite porous. Could use ceramic pieces too or sponges. I don't think it's hard to get enough surface area for nitrification. Go with whatever doesn't get in the way and doesn't cost too much.

I use rubble rock in my sump in a cubed egg crate I made so I can remove it easily if need be (no need so far). I put a led grow light over it and let algae (culupera and nuisance) grow on top of it. Lots of sponges, pods and other life growing on it I presume is either filtering or becoming display tank food.

I use maxspect nano-tech ceramic biospheres. Have them in my sump for several years now without issues. I have them in net bags and take them out every few months on a rotational basis to clean. Have done several ICP with no evidence of aluminum issues.
