Many of us start from somewhere.

At what point in time, can you confidently say to yourself, ¬I think I can keep SPS corals alive and well in my tank¬?

SPS in general: Birdsnest, Acro et al.

What a great question, I guess I'll be following to see what others will say! Personally I think if any of us feel that way then we might lose interest because it will not be challenging anymore! With that said I wish I could say that one day LOL.
I think that we will never have a perfect system because we are trying to play God in our little ecosystems.

Personally, i think when you can grow sps (dont mean montis or birdsnest since those are fairly easy) into a small colony..i think you can consider yourself on the right path.

What if someone doesn't like sps, but still maintains a stable, well established, well grown reef?

I have seen many.

Knowledge + execution

I think he was referrin to sps.. (at least its what i gathered from his post)
But yes mixed reefs is a totaly different subject, and a little harder to keep in my experience.

Well I took some pictures yesterday and I said to my self that I have finally achieved it with this system. I've battled every known pest, bryopsis, aiptasia, AEFW, monti eating nudis, bubble algae, cyano. I moved the system and did some upgrades in Aug 16'. It was like a reset not because of problems but we where forced to move into the new housing on base here.

Today my display is clean, fish are fat, nutrients are low, ALK/cal consumption is up, equipment is humming along no issues (knock on wood), and all my corals are showing color and growth. I am very pleased. This is my reward. FINALLY!

I always say "yes, I've made it...to the fish store...so they can test my water for whatever is going on with it this time". I can't wait to finally have an established system!! I want a blue starfish so bad

i had millipora do fine after 6 months of care and i'd consider them easy/medium in difficulty. if you can keep stable water and have good lighting at that point in the game you have a chance of growing anything. best of luck!

What point is considered a "colony"? 5 fingers, 10 fingers or is it just "x" frag has tripled in size, quadrupled?
I know my acros aren't colonies yet, but they have grown. Some more incrusting, some have branched considerably.
So I was asking myself this question just this past w/e.
My zoas have also doubled and tripled in # of heads, but as sps goes, what is the threshold to colonization?

I think when it outgrows a frag plug, thats when i consider it a colony. But other reefers may differ.

Great topic. Iam on my second year and things are either already colonized or getting there. I'd say for me that the first year is just encrustations and second year is sprounts with some colonies here and there. All from nubs or 1 inch frags. Can't wait for the third year...yet many brownies and dormant frags also...but everyday iam like yes yes yes...and some days iam like no no no. First time with sps and it's live and learn with lots of praying to the sps coral gods!

Every time I think I made it, something takes a wrong turn, I experience some RTN, swear to give up SPS, then everything starts growing again. So with that being said, I don't think I will ever be confident that I have mastered SPS lol.
