I’m 33 and my grandma still sends me a check for my birthday each year, gotta love her. I want to upgrade my testing. Currently I just have API for everything. I’m wonder what are the important things to test for. I have a mostly softy tank with a couple LPS.

Hanna ULR Phosphate checker one of the best investments for my tank
Hanna ULR Phosphate like above, and a good nitrate testing kit like Salifert. Assuming of course you already have a good refractometer or salinity probe.

Bulk Reef Supply just did a series on test kits for the main parameters. They did Alk, Calc, Mag I think, so it might be a good jumping off place.

Salifert for Cal, Alk, and Magnesium are also great.
I have a trident and my results on the trident are almost on the dot precise with the numbers salifert gives me.

I can vouch for that actually... sometimes the Hanna reagents vary from batch to batch... but Hanna is still so quick to do, it’s good for just making sure things aren’t swinging badly.

Thanks for the birthday wishes and suggestions. I decided to get the following

Hanna testers for phosphates and Alk
Sailfert for Nitrates, Calcium, and Magnesium
Red Sea for Iodine

I have a Red Sea Reefer and with the tank came a guide for parameters.

does this seems like reasonable levels?

Good choices on the gift. Numbers look fine with softies and lips. 60 mentioned salt and alk as good points.

Don’t chase the numbers though. Softies are more forgiving, but still need stability. I would like to see the alk in the 8-9 range. But I ran high 11 and 12 for years with you type of set up and no issues

Now show us pix ;)

Salifert; I wouldn't waste money on those Hanna checkers; they can be off. If you test Alk daily like I do, Hanna will get real expensive real quick.
