Sharptai
maybe it's a juv and will change? The black disperses and the spots end up white?

edit: does look like the ones @Mibu posted a pic of.
ls will be grey with white spots and yellow around the head with the 2 nostrils. A sharptail uses its tail to creat a burrow in the sand and will typically bury itself with just its head out.
There’s no real telling which you have. Regardless you need at least a 6ft long tank as they get easily 3-4 feet and don’t curl up like a typical moray. They aren’t as flexible .

hey everyone! Just a little update:
I wanted to thank everyone for the info, it was so helpful! Trying to google the description of the eel in question was going to give me a headache.

Saltwater isn’t just a hobby for me; I also work in an aquarium store that specializes in marine life. I love my tanks and my work so I try my absolute best to know every fish in the store. 95% of the time, I know exactly what it is. However, when I opened up this dude, I was baffled.

After checking the invoice, I realized a big error was made. My boss was charged for a Dwarf Golden Banana Moray Eel. I’m happy I took the time to ask you all for some help; Someone’s at the distributer’s will defiantly be getting an earful tomorrow. I now have to get in contact with the customer who ordered from my shop and apologize ‍*sigh*. Ugh. I’m grateful I didn’t send them a totally wrong fish though.

That snake eel is probably half the price of a dwarf moray
Glad you are getting it resolved!
Well, tbh, my shop retails them for around $289.99. We’d rather them find responsible owners quickly then let them sit around and risk an ignorant newbie killing them. It sounds mean but after the interactions I’ve had with people, I put the fish first lol

The only time we ever price them higher is because 1) they’re full grown adults or 2) they’re the banana one. Even then, we try to keep the price lower than other places.

Hey guys!
I know this thread has been dead for a while but I just wanted to share real quick. I know eels are notorious for jumping out. However, that like ****, LOVES TO JUMP OUT OF TANKS. Like a lot more than any other eel I’ve ever dealt with. Holy Hell. He must’ve done it at least 3 times; I’m so happy I got him sold. I just figured I’d post here in case anyone wanted this exact eel.

Hey guys
I received an eel order this morning; the label claims it’s a dwarf golden moray eel. Looking at it, however, I’m not sure that’s right. Anyone have any ideas what he might be?

One of the other guys here is right. It's not any type of Morey eel. It's a snake eel. A gold-plated snake eel with unique features and markings. Beautiful!

I agree. I was just doing some research, and agree that this is a probably golden spotted snake eel, Myrichthys ocellatus. They do have pectoral fins, and somewhat resemble this eel. Yours may just be a juvenile.
Yes, it is definitely a golden spotted eel. A member of the snake eel. Not Moreys as
Some extra information:
- Part of a class of snake eels, also known as worm eels
- These eels reach around 3 and a half feet
- They are found among reefs, dwelling in the sandbed and rocks
- Their main diet consists of crabs, stomatopods (mantis shrimp), and echinoderms.

They seem to be similar to morays in care, but are more active swimmers. Perhaps someone with experience in these guys can chime in.
You got that right. It is a member of the snake eel family. Most likely a goldenspotted snake eel. It just has a few unique features/markings. But is definitely consistent with a snake eel. As for diet... your right again. They have a diet of almost entirely made of crustaceans.

That is a Myrichthys or snake eel. Probably breviceps. I have a care guide article. Let me know if you need any more help!

All these answers and I wasn’t called in :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing: I guess I have not been selling myself as the snake eel guy well enough.
