Look up Nassarius snails to see if you have a match.
Could somebody ID this snail for me please new to the hobby.
thanks!
That is most likely a whelk... NOT a good guy. Nassarius snails are in the whelk family and are the only whelks you want in your tank. Yours looks more like a mud whelk or other predatory whelk. Hopefully you find it and can remove it from the tank.I have this close up of him with more whites, I can’t find him anymore
Thank you very much, it’s snorkel is kinf of pink little dots. Hopefully I can find him again, where should I be looking for him, rock work at night? That is most likely a whelk... NOT a good guy. He came out again today so I got a few better photos but I think it’s a dove snail what you think?Any more images?
I agree, the shell definitely looks more smooth and egg-shaped than I've seen on nassarius snails. He came out again today so I got a few better photos but I think it’s a dove snail what you think?
It's not a nassarius snail (shell is too different). Quite possibly a dove snail - if so, good cleanup crew member!I agree, the shell definitely looks more smooth and egg-shaped than I've seen on nassarius snails.
Nassarius snails are actually not in the whelk family (buccinidae), but in in the family nassariidae. However, nassariidae is in the superfamily buccinoidea, which contains the family buccinidae. That is most likely a whelk... NOT a good guy. You are correct, I was using the term "family" in the common manner, not as a taxonomic category.Nassarius snails are actually not in the whelk family (buccinidae), but in in the family nassariidae. However, nassariidae is in the superfamily buccinoidea, which contains the family buccinidae.
Thanks good to know I will keep an eye our for their eggsIt’s a dove snail, strombus grazer, aka nano conch. These guys are awesome little algae eaters and will reproduce well. Their egg cases are clear with around 6-8 tiny white specs. 100% reef safe and a great addition to your CUC.
