What would you do if you had the house to yourself for a year, and suddenly could make as bug a mess as possible?

Okay, which of these interest you, why? (Pick up to 3)

  • Planted marine tank with lots of inverts

  • NPS tank with deep sand bed and jawfish or garden eels

  • Lagoon with RFA and LPS

  • Industrial size phytoplankton system with a tank full of filter feeders

  • Predator tank with snowflake eel and soft corals with tunze wave box

  • SPS frag system

  • Clown Harem

Well since NONE of the macroalgae has rooted, and in fact has basically disintegrated to be replaced by hair algae... this is now basically the Eel thread.

Mushu chowing down!
Anybody know how much/frequently I should feed him for optimal heath?

Thanks!

Ordered a bicolor goatfish, small naso tang (remember this tank is being rehomed in 9 months) and some soft corals for this tank. Will post pics when they arrive

Long time, no updates, too much “life” happening. Will just drop a few pics, but we have made some big changes since even these:

The tank went through a very ugly phase:

So family events pulled me out of town and the tanks had to live on autopilot for 6w. Basically my apex and a non-aquarium friend coming over to feed and eyeball things. I set up some cameras so that I could check in on the tank from about 3-3.5 hrs away:

I used these mini cams to watch the tank, highly recommend them:

And then in getting home I walked into a mildew stench from refugium overgrowth and lack of quality skimmer maintenance. So I added the ozone back to the system for some odor relief and went to do some bulb changes, only to find some arrived broken (and they were packed well so idk?)

But at least the reef (plumbed in) looked great. It probably benefitted from decreased feeding actually.

Okay more changes still to document :)

Really my house would look same I’m anal about cleaning as most know , as I’ve posted about my OCD cleaning habits I had with my tank. I’ve just learned two months ago it’s ok for a little GHA to be in a reef

That may be OCD, but I bet you like the results. That white sand is pristine.

Biggest change is exchanging the black hawaiian sand for some Caribbean crushed coral. Of course that is largely turning green :) I used chemiclean red slime remover to great effect prior to the sand change.

Ah the ugly phase...

Not worried about the cycle because the 75g tank is plumbed into 300g of mature reef. Just need to get through the uglies.

Added a long spine urchin. Slightly worried about the trigger “El Greco” as he gets bigger.

The wifey picked out a Cowfish. Thinks this lil fish is “the cutest ever.”

And a juvenile Naso

Lastly, a bunch of photosynthetic gorgonia and the aforementioned bicolor goatfish (love his barbells)

What kind of fish are the circled black and white spotted? I’ve never seen those before!

These are green scat. They are a brackish fish, omnivorous, but they peck at the algae continuously like tangs. Very useful, and they sometimes shoal. They can grow large over time. Some of the front dorsal spikes are toxin producing, but I have never been close to being stuck. Some have alleged they eat aiptasia (why I originally bought them) but I never observed this. They have been great fish for me. Would highly recommend. I think I got the from live aquaria, but was not able to find them there just now.

Oh and when I acclimated them, they came in I think about 1.010 SG. I drip acclimated for about 4-6 hours and then let them in the tank.

How is your cowfish doing? We love ours - he has learned how to spit water at the surface when we are by the tank. Bad habit as I have to keep cleaning the front glass but he's adorable.

How's the bicolor goatfish? We're thinking of getting one. We are fairly heavily stocked in our 125 and looking for one more fish and we think the bi-color goatfish will be it.

“Mogli” the cowfish is doing great. He is still pretty small, but he is willing to compete with the snowflake eel and much larger puffer for food. Seems to be growing well. I look forward to him spitting at us hahaha. It is my wife’s favorite fish - she actually bought and named him. Tons of personality.

The goatfish has worked out well. The barbels are unique and always sifting the sand. Very interesting to watch, unusual for saltwater, feels like a throwback to my teenage freshwater days. Def recommend

Our boxfish name is Junior - he competes with everyone for food and shares the food contraption I had to make for our Nori with our Sailfin Tang - for reference he's about the size of her tail. I tried to include the video I managed to get of him spitting water. It's a bit dark but you can see it.

We only have one bottom dwelling fish right now - a Wide Barred Shrimp Goby - and are looking for something that will sift the sand - we've lost 2 Diamond Gobies to tile surfing.

Good read. Been a while. You need some updates! How is the naso doing?
Unfortunately I had my first ich outbreak about 2 months ago. The naso was not the first fish to get it (that I could tell) but he was the first to pass.

Working on the new tank in Cincinnati. A naso will be on that stocking list for sure.

LOVE if hahaha

The goatfish does a bit of sifting, and it is interesting behavior, but I would not say that it results in a meaningful turnover of the sand-bed like cucumbers, sand sifting stars, or gobies. That being said, I have never been able to get sand sifting gobies to work long term either

I think the goatfish gets his points for visual appeal > utility

good luck

Honestly, with our new aqua-scape we have little sand that is showing and we have a combo of Black Hawaiian and some sort of white - I know it was all livesand from Caribsea when we built the tank. The black is "lighter" than the white and winds up on top. The wavemakers create areas where the black can't sit. We also have a good spread of bottom dwelling corals - Trachy, Lobo and Symphillia and a smattering of zoas and mushrooms. If the goatfish even just mixes the sand up a bit that'll be good in our book. Most of our fish are appearance > function. We tried sand-sifting starfish and it didn't last a week before someone ate it's arms. Our other starfish are fine but something ate the sand sifters arms.

My wife loved the water spitting! She can’t wait for ours to get big and do that. Of course, she doesn’t clean the glass

So as mentioned, a move to Cincinnati is imminent. In keeping with the theme of “make as big a mess as possible,” I’ll leave you all with this teaser. Probably looking to get it wet around September.

Cats for scale ;)
