With uncertainty in how and where we collect coral and fish nowadays being a big challenge to reefing in the future there are also personal challenges as well.
  1. What are some of you PERSONAL challenges for reefing in the future?
  2. What would stop you from keeping a saltwater reef aquarium?
  3. Do you plan for reefing in the future and if so how?

I plan on one more long distance move. I don't know when that will be so I still want to enjoy my reef(s) in the meantime. That means a display that becomes harder and harder to breakdown with each passing day / week / month / year. Still I'm going to enjoy my tanks now because who knows what will happen in the future. Now that I've done the long term move, had reefs setup in my parents bathroom, carpet anemone in bucket for 2 months ect I'm slightly more confident I can do it. I at least know now that the aftermath is much worse then the tear down and transit time.

Honestly, I can't see anything short of death stopping me from having some form of reef. If I go broke I'll have a low tech nano, same if I get seriously hurt. If I'm in the position to travel frequently I will be in the position to hire help.

My future plans are mostly future dreams. At the very least I want to have a dream display tank someday. At the very best I hope to have a large scale propagation system. For now I'm mostly happy with the various tanks I have and just try and continue to learn more about reefing and ways to succeed.

I’m just over one year into reefing, so still pretty new! I have upgraded from a tank with a canister filter to a decent size tank and a sump. New tank means more light, different slimmer, etc... slow and steady for me but thanks to the amount of knowledge and people willing to share it, I’m getting along pretty good. For me, money is the biggest hurdle.

Money is the biggest challenge I have. I have more than enough time and space but this stuff is so expensive. And I also worry about spending that money and the animals I buy dying on me. As it stands I buy one coral a month which means I stand staring at the tanks at the LFS for a creepy amount of time trying to decide which one I want that month.

Adding a tank. Removing the old tank. And converting the closet into a fishroom. Several months of planning. (link to brainstorming thread)

So a combo of a lot of time and a lot of money 0_o

All the above...

Time, money, space, stress from moving, losing fish/corals, more stress.

This hobby is frustrating and stressful!

Travel would be my challenge but that is all it would be, a challenge. I would not stop reefing. I would just invest in more automation.

Travel for me as well. It's hard to find someone who you can trust while you're away to keep an eye on your tanks.

My hobby has turned into a business. With all of the bans on collecting corals and such, aquaculture is the only reasonable route to go. My wife and I are setup and have already have some peices we are growing out. So you could say we are planning for the future, and we will do our part to keep the hobby going and affordable for everyone.
