I thought Turtleweed/Maiden's hair algae (Chlorodesmis) was quite a popular macroalgae a few years back, but it never seems to be available anymore. What happened? Does this have to do with recent collection bans in the Indo-Pacific region (but isn’t Chlorodesmis also native to the Caribbean)?

i cant think

I think it’s mainly from how its not commonly collected - Probably from going down in popularity

Can’t say I’ve seen any recently, but maybe Gulf Coast or KP could special order/collect it for you? I don’t know if either do special orders though

Turtle Grass. Used to see it growing all over the keys in the Gulfside but haven't seen the last few times I've taken the hike
Are you talking about the Turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum) or Turtleweed (Chlorodesmis)? I'm not sure if Chlorodesmis (focus of this thread) can grow so prolifically.

I believe most sea grass are protected and retailers stay away from maidens hair possibly because most customers will think that they are being sold expensive hair algae. I believe only a few people appreciate it for what it is and many less know that they are sold with a crab that has a symbiotic relationship with the maidens hair algae.
