Where did all the Turtleweed/Maiden's hair algae (Chlorodesmis) go?

I thought Turtleweed/Maiden's hair algae (Chlorodesmis) was quite a popular macroalgae a few years back, but it never seems to be available anymore. What happened? Does this have to do with recent collection bans in the Indo-Pacific region (but isn’t Chlorodesmis also native to the Caribbean)?

I think it’s mainly from how its not commonly collected - Probably from going down in popularity

Are you talking about the Turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum) or Turtleweed (Chlorodesmis)? I'm not sure if Chlorodesmis (focus of this thread) can grow so prolifically.

I believe most sea grass are protected and retailers stay away from maidens hair possibly because most customers will think that they are being sold expensive hair algae. I believe only a few people appreciate it for what it is and many less know that they are sold with a crab that has a symbiotic relationship with the maidens hair algae.

Looks like Penicillus, a highly-calcified, green macroalgae. Similar to Chlorodesmis, but not the same.
