Noticed a strange white lump on the side of one of my threadfin cardinals today - it does not look like ich, and I’m leaning towards lymphocystis, but wanted to get some other opinions.

what do you guys think this is? No heavy breathing, eating healthy, maybe being harassed a little too much by neon goby but not terrible haha

Is that reef safe? What leads you to think bacterial over lymph?
Lymphocystis would be a nodule or salt grain mainly on fins and generally surface. This is more than a pimple like dot. Another alternative would be seachem Kanaplex or metroplex

Is there a chance this could subside on its own given he’s new?

Can it spread?

If you were me would you dose the display or pull him out to medicate?

Depends on medication. Ruby rally Pro can be used in display whereas Maracyn in a seperate quarantine setting
Should not spread and as for healing its own,,,, if loose or raw tissue- Treat

Appreciate the advice! Would you define this as loose or raw tissue?

I’ve tried quarantining before and the fish ended up dying even though I was changing 50% of water daily, suspect ammonia poisoning. I dont have room to keep a 2nd tank cycled.

Im also afraid to dose my display since theres a bunch of other fish and coral.. haalp

my firefish has not been taking kindly to them - wonder if it couldve maybe been from a nip from him. There’s also a bit of internal squabbling amongst the 3. Think its likely from a nip?

What is the harm in taking a wait and see approach to see if it gets worse/better before deciding what to do?
Yes- it’s post injury

My other dilemma is what if I take all the time and effort to treat and it keeps happening due to the territorial purple firefish? Am I better off letting nature take its course there?
As stated - keep an eye on it but be prepared to treat if necessary
Isolating the fire fish will give it best chance of healing

Sounds good! Appreciate it sir, very helpful! Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll have a way to get that firefish out without uprooting the tank - its only 20 gallons. Whats happening is the 3 threadfins are respecting the firefish territory, but the neon goby chases them from the left side of the tank to the firefish’s territory and he nips at em.

They otherwise seem happy but not the best luck for em right now - today the threadfins have at least figured out they can face the neon goby and he wont try to clean them. He really freaks em out :(
