I’m thinking of getting a clam, specifically a Derasa. I’m running LEDs (photon V2) on a deeper tank (24”) and am concerned about the light demands. I’ve considered a squamosa, but I think the derasa is probably the best to start with in this tank. Any input or advice on keeping clams?

LED’s can grow any common photosynthetic organism nowadays. The only thing you need to worry about is spectrum (light specifically designed to grow coral) and intensity.

Derasa clams are relatively low light clams. Around 175 - 200 par is generally recommended.

I have a photon v2 on a 90g tank that’s 24” deep and 2 clams on bottom. A maxima (11 years) and Derasa (2 years). Run the lights at 70% blue channels and 35% white channel with no issues.
Perfect, this is what I’m looking for. I don’t run that much white but my blue channels are on 80%. What’s your light schedule like? 8 hours? 12 hours? How is the derasa mounted? Is he on the sand?

Derasa is on the sand. The real Light schedule is 2pm to 9pm. So really they only get the full power 70/35 from 3 to 8 since there is that 1 hour ramp up and down.

I have the lights on from 11am to 11pm but it’s only like 1 or 2% with the exception of that 2pm to 9pm period.

PAR is most important consideration from given lighting as light is a requirement for their production of zooxanthellae. I have mine under Orpheks

Was my derasa grown under redsea 90 leds in an xl300. Did well for years and then went south. No water quality issues to my knowledge. Have a new one added this week. Under 2 x xr15 g5 pros ab+ 65% intensity Also tryin to source a squamosa to see which I prefer. Will donate either to a local reefer friend.

A mimosa clam, Kessil 500x set above middle of a Reefer170. Light is 40% running to the blue side. Same tank for 3 yrs. Or better and doing fine, gaining size and weight. It’s set off to the side of tank. Clam is blue and tan with teal. N03 around 3-5, p04 anywear from .07-.19 depending on coral food and if it’s close to water change time or not. I have tenuis, Granulosa, scolys , blastos and a small anemone, the p04 hasn’t hurt.
