Why does everything have to be a challenge? Why cant we just build our reefs and enjoy them instead of making everything a competition?

I personally get a lot of calming effects from looking at my tank. If I was to make it a competition, then where would the fun and calmness come from? I would be obsessed over trying to make that little frag grow faster so I can beat my fellow reefers.

Again, not the purpose of owning a tank.

it's not a challenge ,a documentation, how i can retain a coral for 30 years ,spread square footage of frag to fellow reefers over that time, retaining, growing, sharing,is that not a purpose of reefing, and preservation..what is??

Grpwing and giving away is what the hobby is all about. 100% agree!

To make it a challenge or competition loses it's value.

In that case I'll play. This is just a year and a half growth of a purple stylo.

Frag when it was given to me by a fellow reefer(about 2"):

And now(I'll get a pic of just this coral when my lights come on). You can see it on the upper left side of the rock:

I started with one head torch...

Very similar to the growth I have on my frogspawn. I chopped it up about a year ago and gave half away to someone I'm mentoring.

I started with 1 head, grew to about 40. Cut half up, gave away 20+ heads, and now have about 40 heads again. That thing just grows like a weed. Now if I could get my wall hammer to grow like that I would be happy as a bed bug.

Purely out of curiosity, which is you? Holding the coral, or the guy in the background? If your in the background, I had an old boss that could be your identical twin(unless of course you used to own a restaurant in upstate NY, then you are my old boss!

Mine had 70ish heads before its demise last year. All of my euphilia died in 2 days.

Had the same thing happen. Never did figure out why(wasn't bacterial, or BJD). Took me almost 2 years before I could put another euphyllia in my tank. All other corals were fine, just euplyllia that was effected.

If I had all my old euphyllia that died in that crash, I would be a rich guy right now.
