What are you water parameters? Maybe to much nutrients? How often do you do a water change? And how much do you change? Normally a good few water changes will work wonders if you nutrients are high. If phosphates are the issue you could use some Phosphate RX to lower them and remove the algae hand.

I think you have a water problem.
That does not look like a 1.5 year old tank. That rock and sand glass and powerhead should be covered in stuff.

What are your parameters?

The tank had been running 1.5 years so what was in it prior to these latest additions. Looks like you have a pretty coarse substrate which will easily trap excess food and detritus.

Is it just me or what but I am not seeing a lot of algae in the pics...

I would say best way to get help is provide as much info as possible

Params
Tank stats
Filtration
Feeding schedule
Maintenance schedule
Stocking past and present
Etc etc
Anything you can think of

The first place I would start is water tests. That would tell you if excess nutrients are the issue and that can also be directly related to canister filter maintenance
