Go with herbie. They should have given you a dorsal tube and a short tube with a cap on it. Or the gurgling might drive you mad.

For the short pipe you want a gate valve to control the water level in the overflow. Or, you'll have constant flushing sounds vs gurgling. Pretty entertaining to mess around with though. Keep the dorsal fully open.

I hope he gave you 3 bulk heads. And, the dorso for the long tube. Sucks the short tube is chipped. These china guys are mean. And clean those pipes well. Mine were so filthy.
The sc aquariums are emergency, return pipe and main drain. While the herbie uses all 3 as drains. Nothing wrong with that. It's just more parts to get.
But I run them as primary (left or right), return (middle) and dorso (left or right).

Did they give you the dorso setup? Or just the straight tubes?

Okay,

Herbie Overflow

A two pipe design, consisting of a valve-controlled siphon drain and an emergency line next to it.

Bean Overflow

A 3 drain overflow is often referred to as a Bean Overflow.

Lots of readings.

I don't have a durso on my SCA 150 and there's no gurgle at all. I run the water level between the short and long pipes, set with a gate valve

I use a ball valve. MUCH harder to control. I need to buy a gate valve. But, I'm tired of ordering online. Only reason I haven't finished my sump plumbing. I'm using the green hose they gave me and a ball valve. I'm asking for trouble.

You'll love it. It's so quiet. And if your equiptment is quiet. You'll only hear the fish bicker.
I do like their skimmer. The return pump broke on me. The impeller was shot and warped. If you got the pnp system, might want to think about backup return pump.

you cant run with 2. what the heck you are getting cheated left and right.
Call steve and tell him you are missing one.

Do you have a Grainger nearby? Should be able to get a gate valve there

I just emailed him. I'm missing my overflow cover as well. I'm sure he'll handle it. I've got time
