HOW TO ENTER

Official Entry: Post in this thread one tip that has been really helpful to you with the reef hobby. The more unique or lesser known the tip is, the better! We're looking for specific pieces of advice that may have helped with a specific issue or helped you to achieve success. (We're hoping for more than "Go slow and have patience." Give us something specific.)

Official entry: Use bottled beneficial bacteria when starting up a new tank

So on Tuesday I found a link on here to help with my Mandarin Dragonet and a bloated swim bladder. Let me tell ya this was very helpful as I wanted to do anything I could to save him. So after watching a video several times on how to lance his swim bladder I set everything up and got started on this. Not gonna lie I was nervous as heck doing this but it was either try it or let him die. It wasn't a complete success but I learned so much on the care for a sick fish and have a ton of respect for anyone who does as much as they can to save a pet.

The Kessil A360X has an acclimation program that allows you to slowly acclimate your corals over a period up to 14 days. The program starts at 20% and gradually adjusts every day. You just have to press the on button on the left side of the Kessil app screen. This also allows you to shorten the period or adjust the % of light. This works when you are using the Wi-Fi dongle and the app. It's a great feature and something that reefers tend to overlook or forget to do.
Don't blast new coral frags with full lighting, as this will shock and it can bleach them.
(and yes - I know this is a Noopsyche contest but the task was to post something that may be helpful to other reefers and this made me think about lighting...)

Best advice I got was to start up a tank as simple as possible. Filter sponge and rock. Thats it. Best advice I got! Some people can buy too much unnecessary things at the very beginning. Think simple and learn how to handle it without all the gadgets.

When researching potential tank inhabitants, searching on how to catch or trap it will surface all of the things you might later wish you had known before you bought it and added it to your tank. Case in point, the six line wrasse. There are many who recommend that fish as an easy beginner fish, but you find out about it's bully tendencies when you research how to catch it.

Use a grounding probe in all tanks...some equipment leak small voltages that cause fish and coral to do poorly for no apparent reason.

Do not chase every single number!!!!

All tanks are different and will settle in at their own number. (Of course if something is wacky, slowly fix it, yes slowly. Only bad things happen fast)

Don't trust the salesperson at stores like Petco or Petsmart.

The biggest tip I've heard, and shared, is that you need to stop thinking like you're keeping fish, or keeping coral, or any of the individual things inside your tank.

You're caring for an isolated ecosystem, so you need to take a whole-system approach. Any time you focus on a detail, no matter how minor, you need to consider how it affects the system as a whole.

Official Entry: I've learned a lot here on R2R and over at my local club (Boston Reefer's). So many it's hard to pick one. I'd have to say the tips I got about feeding Mandarins have been very helpful - from pod hotels to DIY feeders.
