Who knows. The plywood, if properly attached does make the stand stronger.

Unfortunately, the ways it strengthens, is in a manner that doesn't really matter unless you're trying to crush it lengthwise.

It will not help with center sag or twist of the stand in a meaningful way, which are the two biggest concerns.
Its a supporting base versus hole and Using a leveling mat provides the surface needed.

I have a plywood top. I was not happy with how un-level my horizontal spans were, so I covered it with plywood, then planed it with a jig and a router. It is laser flat, as you can see in this picture with the laser level!

I'm a fan of using plywood on top for those reasons exactly.

I also know it provides little to no actual support vertically, to the fish tank.

In other words. A stand with 3/4" borg plywood in top is not a lot stronger, than a stand with 1/8" hardboard. It won't hold a high percentage more weight. It's there for other reasons. Not to make the stand carry more weight.

Dang, this thread exploded today! What happened? Lol

In any event, in case you guys missed it. I decided to go with an offset center brace. Gives me a 48" opening to remove my sump. Putting on the first coat of acrylic exterior high gloss paint.

Nice rail! I’m slumming it with connectors.

In my case , It came on my 400g and Im glad it did, as when My tank and stand arrived from shipping, It was this very base that kept the stand together from Damage as you can see below. Made it easy to rebuild it.

I think we may be talking about the benefits of plywood, in different planes which is hard to explain over text and without hand motions.
