SPAX screws are excellent screws. I think those would be a solid choice.

And I might go with a 2.5" screw length. The reason is, if you're using 2x material (ie: 2x4's, 2x6's, etc.) all that material is 1.5" thick. If you butt two pieces together, you'll get 3" total. If you drive in a 3" screw and countersink the screw head even a little, the tip of the screw will poke out the other side. I'd use 2.5" screws and countersink them to about 1/8"-1/4" deep.

I'd also suggest a good, waterproof wood glue like Titebond III or similar.

If you have any questions about DIY stand building, I'm happy to try and help :)

Good luck!

Also: as far as finishing goes, is there a waterproof finish I need to get or something for the wood? or will it be ok
or is there a water proof paint I should consider? would it replace the finish or do I do both the paint and finish

You could leave it natural, but it might mildew or you get kind of dirty. The stand would look better and be protected if you were to prime it and paint it. You could also stain it and then coat it with polyurethane. Definitely sand the cut edges smooth and seal them. Good luck.

You’ll get a lot of opinions on finishes with some recommending fancy epoxy paints or marine paints for boats. I also used stain and polyurethane. I’ve used MinWax PolyCrylic with good luck, I’ve used it over stain and paint. And for paint, I had always like Rustolium Painter’s Choice, but I’m not sure they still make it. The stand I’m working on currently I just used Kilz primer, then regular Glidden exterior house paint, with the PolyCrylic on top.

Good luck with your stand. Ive been working on one for the past year...yeah, not kidding. Life keeps getting in the way. I plan on putting poly on mine. I like the look of clear wood. Besides, the defects in the wood give it character.
