Time for a story from my past - this is absolutely true - however I forget the exact amount.
It was 25K or 40K, something like that. It was in the early 1970s.
The headline in my newspaper read "man receives 25K life insurance payout for his guppy".
A gentleman received an unsolicited offer for a life insurance policy for his dependent.
As a lark, the gentleman filled out the policy naming his guppy. He provided accurate information, age, weight, etc.
Presumably, going along with the joke, the company sent him a policy naming his guppy.
A short time later the guppy died and the gentleman filed a claim.
The insurance company declined of course - stating it was obviously a joke.
The gentleman took the company to court.
The judge ruled: your client provided accurate information, you provided a policy, pay the man!

After Superstorm Sandy my tank crashed after days without power. My homeowners insurance said they would cover lost equipment (tank cracked, pumps, etc. after deductible) but not livestock. The tank was going on 10 years at the time so the replacement valve of the fish and coral would have been thousands of dollars.
I'd love to be able to get insurance to cover that type of loss.
That's why my next purchase is a generator!
