My tank only has 1" of (special grade) sand.

Can I keep a clam in my tank or should I steer clear of them?

Keeping a clam is not dependent upon sand. They attach to rock. You can use rock or rock rubble, a shell of sufficient size, a cermaic clam cradle, etc.
