For the record, this little one takes the cake for nicest fish under a $100 now for me. Didn’t think I’d be able to find one under $100, especially with seeing what these go for at online retailers.

My LFS had this gorgeous little one in and for $70 I just couldn’t say no. She’s a beauty and I’m looking forward to watching her transition. The lights are now off until tomorrow and she’s already found her little cave where she’s tucked away now.
is it reef safe?

With caution they are. I find that if you keep them well fed you have a better shot but you always run the risk of them deciding to take a snack on certain corals. In my situation the risk is worth the reward having such a beautiful specimen in the tank.

Juvenile Emperor Angel is my favorite. Like watching the fish grow to adult, with all of the color change.

It’s not rare, or super exotic, but it’s got to be the fuzzy dwarf lionfish. Bold, full of personality, and beautiful. Lionfish are what got me into the saltwater hobby in the first place.

I picked "no matter the cost". Not because I like super expensive holy grail fish or anything. I buy fish that are going to hold my interest long term, with the caveat that they must be captive bred. I think my most expensive fish is a CB Swallowtail Angel at about $230. Though, my favorite is still probably my mandarin.

Beautiful fish in the saltwater aquarium hobby is not lacking and you don't have to spend a fortune to get a nice, good looking fish for your tank! So that being said let's talk about some great fish choices for under $100!

1. What's your favorite saltwater fish that's normally priced under $100?

2. What makes this fish your favorite choice?

I love all Tangs and how they swim by far!! I am going to go with my Yellow Tang since I had her for over 5years!
There is something about how tangs can just glide and swim in currents vs others reef fish in your system...

I like Bluestripe pipefish. They are not very expensive but real interesting and inquisitive.

They also spawn constantly but have a short lifespan of a few years like all pipefish.
The picture doesn't do their blue justice.

They are in this video

For Under a hundred for me means a few fish due to different tank sizes that I have.

My 8g Water Box = Yasha Goby and a Pistol Shrimp combo around 75.00 for the pair

My 25g Nuvo Lagoon (Nem Tank) = Bullethole Clownfish under 65.00 each from LFS vs. Online pricing for WYSIWYG.

My 40g Nuvo = Starcki Damsel or Orange Spotted Blenny

Future Fish Only 6ft tank = Triggers and Puffers ( Wide selection at 100.00 ea). I've had foot long puffers in the past... they recognize you from across the room and will happily feed from your hands. Almost like a dog in the water. Downside very messy fish, have to have a strong filtration system to handle the bio/poop load.

Hardy? only if they eat frozen and even then they can go off it for no reason. I would not call a mandrin a "hardy" fish. They are beautiful without a doubt, but a rather difficult fish to keep for many due to their feeding demands.
