In freshwater forums I see lots of people recommending Kanaplex but very few saying it worked and lots of people looking for ideas after treatment failure.

In a discus forum, someone mentioned that KanaPlex dosed as instructed is under-dosed significantly compared to what's recommended in veterinary references (Noga's book, etc.).

Their new scoop size is supposed to be 125 mg.

SDS indicates it's 31.7% pure.

One scoop per 20 L is then 1.98 mg/L.

Recommended dose is 50-100 mg/L or 25-50X more.

One study has found that Columnaris is borderline resistant to kanamycin.

I guess that explains why it never seems to work. Thanks, Seachem! Another fine product...

As there are no antibiotics available for over-the-counter sale in Canada, and I have no access to a veterinarian (who can write pX for fish), I'm limited to:

Methylene blue
Copper Power
Hydrogen Peroxide

Rally Pro seems to be in something of a grey area -- I've noted that at least two Canadian companies stock it on a regular basis.

People are sleeping on this one: Blue Planet ‘Cure All’

It has Malachite Green, Methylene Blue and Acriflavine. In my experience it destroys Velvet and Ick. I have also used it against Uronema and I believe it does reverse it.

I use this product the following way.. I put the fish in a very basic QT with fresh mixed water and dose as recommended. On day 3 I transfer the fish into a new sterile QT and dose as recommended for another 3 days. This will clear any disease, then I do hybrid TTM to be extra sure. My fish survived velvet as well as ick using this method and have been back in my display for two months with no disease.

Following the current quarantine protocol, I always have Coppersafe and PraziPro (or API General Cure).
Also at the ready, Metroplex, Kanaplex, Neoplex, and Focus, plus Erythromycin (for eye-related bacterial infections).

Not medicine, but also at hand to counter when needed to remove copper is Cuprisorb. And ammonia alerts to spare, which help me not mess up (too much) during quarantine/treatment time.

I usually don't keep anything for the fish, just Cipro for anemones, but it is too hard to find lately.

  • Copper Power or Copper Safe Cryptocaryon / velvet
  • PraziPro (praziquantel in solution) External Flukes
  • Kanaplex (kanamycin) Gram + / - bacteria infections
  • Metronidazole Gram + bacteria infections
  • Maracyn (erythromycin) Gram + bacteria infections
  • Rally Pro (acriflavine, aminoacridine) Gram + / - bacterial infections

  • I do not have anything stocked to treat Brooklynella. Chloroquine is not available due to public misuse as a covid treatment. I do not stock formalin due to associated risks.
Is Rally Pro not formalin as well? Or are there different kinds of Rally Pro?

No according to Ruby Reef. I contacted the company to confirm the contents of the Pro version of the product since the are not listed on the label. I was told by a representative that " a micro portion of formalin is used as a catalyst to form a whole new compound. There is virtually no trace of formalin in the finished product".

There are a lot of different illnesses out there, and all appear different.
Mainly what you want to look out for is abnormal change in behavior or appearance. Check if the fish have gotten more lethargic, scratching against rocks, stopping eating, or getting thinner. Many diseases also will cause white patchy appearances or white spots on the fish.
