Can I change my choice?
I was VERY close to walking out of the LFS with this. A juvenile Halichoeres garnoti.

When I started the hobby back in '92, yellow tangs were everywhere. The ugliest fish I ever seen. Never wanted one. I spoke to the guy who ran the lfs because I wanted a mandarin goby, he told us their dietary needs, and I passed. I did keep one for 5+ years from 2006 to 2010 or 2012. My log is gone and pictures are destroyed, most of them
Around '94 I saw a purple tang.. I was a little fascinated. I eventually did get one. Kept her for many years until I moved.

Copper bands, purple tangs, mandarin gobies. I just love them!

My second ribbon eel, shy at first. I added all kinds of weird things to get him comfortable. Kept for a few years. Eventually he got out and no one was home.

Is that a cone of shame?

I had heard and constantly looked at photos of this species, this was my first ever encounter with one though. It’s a truly stunning species and photos do it all it’s justice!

Live Aquaria is knocking on your door lol. 20 bucks for what they describe as peaceful. I’ll be watching for one of these. Thx.

This is the eel I’d love to have. Stunners if you see one in person! My personal favourites are the Black Ribbons as they’re just so different to the slightly more common Blues.
They’re the same species, the black ones are just juveniles, they eventually turn blue.

I always thought the black colouration was female/juvenile and blue was male

As I understand it, black eels are undifferentiated juveniles, which then become blue males, and finally yellow females.
From what I’ve read, all juveniles are black and male, then they all turn into blue males as they mature, and then some of those males will turn into yellow/greenish females (some of which will retain some blue on their anterior). They are protandric or sequential hermaphrodites.
