Not So Yellow Tang .

Purchased a Yellow Tang, because they're just stunning. I've heard the tank bred ones have issues with colours.
Here's mine a few days in the tank. She's only small, around 3-4 cm. - Will she colour up over time as she grows?

I'm feeding nori seaweed with garlic and she's also keen on some brine shrimp.

That's interesting.
I have seen pictures where the color fill was similar but those tiny fishes were mostly see-through. Yours seems to be lacking pigment? It may fill in but it looks like a ghost tang to me.

I have no first hand experience with tiny yellow tangs but all of the ones that I have seen still have a hint of yellow even when being partially see through like already mentioned.
It would be cool if it was an aberrant tang.

I got one of those tank bred tangs…most are pale yellow but yours is even more of an outlier …
I’d like to see it when it grows up…please revisit your thread in a few months for us

Captive bred are like that at first and color up just as nicely in my opinion.

That said, it does almost appear to be an aberrant based on the yellow on the fins.

It will probably color up fine in time, however if it doesn't you hit the jackpot.

Some misinformation here. OP - yes, the tang will color up as it matures. This is normal even in the wild. If you do a search here someone has both captive bred and wild collected yellow tangs side by side. You can't tell the difference.

Other examples: I purchased 4 captive bred Pink Square Anthias. They arrived small and almost translucent. They are full color now.

Milletseed butterfly fish - another one that arrived pale in color. Several months later as it grew colors are fine.

Yeah! Thats my boy Chip. Biota! I did have a wild yellow in my tank until I lost him in the tank crash. This was my wild caught Mr. bubbles. Chip isnt as big as him yet but I do think he will look the same, he is already a vibrant yellow and he isnt even a year old yet!

Thanks for supporting us and purchasing one of our yellow tang! Yes, they will color up just like their wild counterparts. I haven't seen a single one stay pale yet. Of the thousands we've cultured we've only seen two with aberrant but we hold those back for future projects.

Oddly enough, it may be lighting.

I was at my LFS last week and they had just received about a dozen yellow tangs. They all appeared white with a very slight yellow tinge. He was prepping to send one home with a customer that was en route and scooped one out of the DT and placed it in a white 5 gallon bucket and I’ll be danged if it didn’t appear to be as yellow as any other.

Yours is cool looking. Looks like extra or missing pigment. For sure a keeper!
