I'd say I am jealous! I just tested mine today, 1170.

I have the SeaChem gray coast gravel as well, which is supposed to help maintain Magnesium levels according to SeaChem.

What salt do you use?

Some systems don't use up as much. I tested mine today at 1290. Chaeto, for me, uses a ton. If you keep up with water changes with a salt that tests high, then you could be fine. :) I have to add 330grams/30gal of seachems mag to my topoff whenever I refill to keep it up.

It is most likely due to Salt mix levels of Mg++, if you are having exceptionally low growth rates then that is another option, but green algae would also use some Mg++.

I would say that the salt mix is the reason for the lack of dosing. Most softies and lps are going to calcify and in the process Mg will be incorporated into CaCo3 Matrix.

This could be part of my issue, I have a LOT!

may also be because i dont have to many sps. mostly softies.

I am sure this contributes to your success in keeping it high. I have a TON of SPS, and it is all growing at an alarming rate.
