Mixed Reef Unfinished Haven

- Hello, I'm Tony! I've been introduced into the saltwater hobby since i was 10. My older brother who served; actually got me into the hobby. Although he wasn't really keen on the corals but more so the fish. I remember I'd always overhear the LFS vendor trying to upsell him on equipment, and he would always give into it. I on the other hand, as i got older; as we all do get the privilege to buy our own things. I ended up getting a hand me down long 55 gallon FO tank, that I shamefully didn't really understand how to manage at the time. Needless to say, the inhabitants and tank itself was 86'd after a VERY short while. I took a hiatus on the idea of saltwater and its hobby. Until I needed an output, so I got a tank during covid so the year was 2020 (i think) and ever since I've been obsessed with corals and learned so much via wins and loses.. I've had lots and lots of losses but funny enough March from Fragbox/Reef Casa told me on a youtube live "if you don't keep trying after crashes then you don't really have the passion for it to begin with". And I don't think there have been truer words spoken.

*random tank fact*
The Rasta Zoas are one of the first 5 corals that i got when i started the tank in 2020... They survived through multiple crashes, and multiple aptasia stings. And yet, through all the feats.. they're attaching to a main rock I have after 6 years. and they look better than ever. They might be my most priceless coral in my tank, above some heavy hitters.

- I haven't done a water change in 3 months as an experiment.. Maybe I should of got a better less expensive control but I don't think any of these experiments will crash my tank lol.
I will preform 1 gallon water changes this weekend to see if there's any noticeable differences after not doing a WC after 3 months.

- Patience. Finding how to do things your way instead of following all the ways of everybody else. Taking time to find what works for you, your time, budget etc. I do think that Reef2Reef however has taught me this. Members like Tbrown and KingRanch have taught me to do things my own way. I credit them for that.
Otherwise keep your head up and don't quit when times get hard. Trust me i've been there!

- I started my first reef aquarium in 1999. I formed an aquarium service company in 2008, and this tank was one of my first major installs. When the client moved, I bought the tank back from them and swapped my existing livestock into it. The true percula clownfish are at least 20 years old. The last reset was during a house move almost 3 years ago.

- Water Chemistry Detail
- I mix up a 5 gallon bucket of saturated kalkwasser once a week. I really like ESV brand. I them add 15ml of Tropic marin bacto balance to the mix. This is added via a cheap BRS low- flow doser running continuously. It raises pH, adds calcium/ alkalinity, carbon dosing, and top off. Since it is running at max speed continuously, it also eliminates the chance of overdosing kalkwasser or bacterial food. I run RO water through the line every month or so to clean it.

- Live rock is old Fiji and Vanuatu pieces from early days in the hobby. It is stacked in a slanted wall that allows the fish to swim in the front lit part of the tank or behind in the shadows. I have noticed that providing many hiding places decreases aggression compared to more open tanks that I service.

- 45 gallons every two weeks. I have a float valve set on a water tank in my garage to stop at 45 gallons. I dump a 50 gallon bag of Reef Crystals in and the external pump mixes and then sends it to my tank.

- Nitrate levels tend to stay on the low side for an NPS reef (10-20 ppm). This is likely due to (1) the light bioload—one pipefish and two snails—(2) feeding mainly live Artemia nauplii, and (3) Caulerpa (which I found to be a voracious consumer of nitrate).

- This is a 40 L, NPS-focused reef. Fish & inverts include a banded pipefish, two turban snails, a feather duster worm, and sea squirts. The coral collection includes several NPS gorgonians & sea whips (not sure of the exact species, but quite common in East Asia), Purple Dendronephthya, Paraminabea rubeusa, Koji Wada Pink Nepthea, another Nephthea/Litophyton soft coral, and two fathead Dendrophyllia colonies. Caulerpa macroalgae can be seen in the back, which is a great for nutrient export.
