I'm trying to restain a stand I had purchased. I already sanded that stand with a 150 grit paper and didn't think to use a stripper before hand. Would it be too late to use the stripper? I was planning to use a darker stain than the one on the stand. Could I start over with an 80 grit paper and move up? anything would help.

I build cabinets and stuff for a living and I prefer to use steel wool for the finer grains - safer, faster. Also great for between coats, 0000.

Just regular steel wool from a hardware store? Obviously I don't know much of these things... could I go straight to using wool or work my way up to steel wool.

So here's to day 1 on sanding the stand with 120 grit.

That's looking great! I just started doing the same thing to mine last night. I'm going to let you stain first, so you can share the Dos and Don't Dos. :)

What's that you say? No sanding? I'm about to bust out a sanding/deglossing product. I don't need to?

I hope you don't mind me stepping on your thread, where we're doing the same thing, Panda. How long did it take you to sand all that?

It's cool I don't mind :) I'm trying to get sanded stained to my liking by this weekend if weather is good. I'm going to move from 120 to 150 and then to 220. Finish it off with steel wool and in between coats. I hope it turns out pretty good...

Day 3 I had time to work on the stand before class. I unscrewed the hinges from the doors to sand them as well maybe switching out the hinges. Got most of the scratches from the side of the stand. It also had some grooves and wasn't able to get then sanded. So sanded down the top trim. Hopefully I'll finish this by this weekend.

I redid all my cabinets with general finishes gel stain then poly acrylic over that no sanding required. If you want to paint without sanding use chalk paint. Either way you do not need to sand.
