That’s a magnesium test kit though.Calcium tests precipitate magnesium, and if it is not complete, readings will be too high as it may detect some magnesium as calcium.

I mistakenly assumed from the title we were talking about calcium. I expect it is the opposite: a step to bind up the calcium so it doesn’t show as magnesium.
