Sarah Brusseau, an environmental lawyer with the American Bar Association (ABA) is sounding the alarm: Coral reefs are threatened with extinction, resulting in job loss, ecosystem destruction, and loss of food supply to over half a billion people worldwide. Yet, reefs are largely unprotected and unregulated. Here, she presents a three-point strategy to conserve coral reefs through governance and management. One of those is to upgrade fishing regulations. The Coral Reef Aquarium Fisheries Campaign engages with coral reef aquarium fisheries management agencies in places like Florida and Indonesia to discover and promote methods that are working, and to make recommendations for strengthening regulatory frameworks.
