Hi fellow members,

New to the reefing world and still learning. I have a 20 G tank with good parameters. Tank is under 8 weeks old.

I have 3 questions regarding
1) green looking algae in my filter
2) on my coral and now at the base of that corals plug (coral I am not sure what it is; I won at a local auction for $3.00). Do note: the coral arrived with the algae on the top but now the base has it growing (2 weeks old coral purchase).
3) is spikes growing out of my zoa that I previously trimmed and came back.

Any insight would be great. Do I trim the algae on my hard coral and do I clean out the filter. And what about the zoa?

Input is much appreciated!!

By the way. My fluval nano light is positioned right above my tank filter (will not fit the rim tank edges) so maybe that has to do with the speeded up growth on the filter? Filter is 2 weeks old. Swapped from an aggressive aqueon.

Green film algae is normal in new tanks, pretty sure it’s common in older and mature ones too. In the early stages manual removal is probably the best bet to get rid of it, use a credit card or algae scrubber. Pipe cleaners should work for the filter intake.
