I would guess it may be related - especially since you did such a thorough job in starting with new rock and cleaning prior to start up of the new tank - now that you've found a possible contributor and you can eliminate that, maybe you can get rid of it for good. I am not knowledgeable about whether tin is related but I would think having something not good going on in the tank could equal and bad result
